Pride Summer at Make the Road

We’ve been celebrating our LGBTQ pride all summer long and our work promoting respect and dignity for all New Yorkers continues to make waves!

This year, we rocked Queens and Brooklyn Pride Parades, held our very own 3rd Annual Translatina March and 9th Annual Bushwick Pride, our organizer Bianey Garcia was awarded by the City Council for her exceptional leadership to further LGBTQ rights; and we organized a civil disobedience outside the Democratic National Committee’s LGBTQ summit with President Obama to demand the President stop deporting LGBTQ immigrants.

Want to learn more about our LGBTQ Justice work? Contact organizers Julian (English) or Bianey (Spanish) and help us in our work to:

End Workplace Discrimination:

We’re educating local businesses and advocating for stronger legal protections, including a New York State whistleblower policy and the state Gender Expression Non Discrimination Act (GENDA).

Stop Police Harassment and Condoms-as-Evidence:

Last year we helped win the Community Safety Act that protects LGBTQ New Yorkers from police discrimination. Now we’re pushing the state to stop the justice system from using condoms as evidence of prostitution, so all New Yorkers can carry condoms without fear of arrest.

Create Equal Access to Healthcare:

We’re organizing to repeal New York State’s Medicaid exclusions, which prevent the use of Medicaid for transgender related health care. Through our health programming, we’re also directly helping hundreds of LGBTQ individuals access care, HIV testing, and disease prevention education.

Stop LGBTQ Deportations:

As the fight for immigration reform continues, we’re pushing President Obama to stop deporting LGBTQ immigrants, many of whom may face persecution in their home countries. In June, we blocked traffic outside President Obama’s LGBTQ summit in protest.

Make Our Schools Safe:

Our youth leaders continue to implement their LGBTQ awareness curriculum and develop of Queer-Straight Alliances— now at 7 high schools in Queens and Brooklyn!
